Deputy Head of Lighting and Video
Sonia Friedman Productions is seeking applications for a full-time, experienced Deputy Head of Lighting and Video to work on the London production of MEAN GIRLS.
Book by Tina Fey, music by Jeff Richmond, lyrics by Nell Benjamin and Directed and Choreographed by Casey Nicholaw - this musical will arrive in the West End in June 2024.
The Deputy Head of Lighting & Video will work with the Head of Department to deliver and reproduce the creative aspiration of the Video Designer, Lighting Designer and the Associate Lighting Designer.
Lighting responsibilities include:
- Maintaining the creative look of the production
- Responsible for the safe operation of all LX and video hired/sub hired equipment. Report any issues to the Head of Department. If swap outs are required, organise proactively and efficiently to support the production.
- Undertake all LX and video checks and ensure these are complete prior to each rehearsal and/or performance. Troubleshoot as necessary. Develop a thorough knowledge of all equipment.
- Ensure that any backstage lighting, wing workers and quick-change lighting is in place and operational.
- Check the houselight operation before each performance. Where possible ensure venue ambient lighting is extinguished/reduced to support the overall look of the show.
- Assist the Head of Department to order and keep accurate stock records of all consumables. Ensure any purchases are agreed with the production office and any supplies from vendors requested in a timely fashion.
- Contribute to the maintenance of hired lighting and video equipment/and or show owned equipment. Keep updated maintenance and inspection records.
The ideal applicant should have a good grasp of theatre video hardware, an aptitude to learn new software and workflows, and an attention to detail. Video responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Powering on, checking the system and running the show
- Performing routine maintenance of computers, rack equipment and LED screens
- Working with rental partners to service and replace faulty hardware
- Photograph understudies and new cast members for content requirements
A knowledge of the following hardware is preferable:
- Disguise media server
- EOS lighting console
- Brompton LED processor
- Roe LED tiles
- Lightware matrices (with 4k 10-bit pipeline)
- Adder XDIP KVM systems
- Netgear AV range
- BlackMagic Studio Cameras
Experience on a large-scale production is essential.

- Contract Type: Fixed term until Sunday 8th June 2025, or for the run of the Production, whichever shall be the shorter, subject to two weeks’ notice by the Producer as per the SOLT/BECTU Agreement.
- Salary: Weekly rate as per SOLT/BECTU Agreement.
- Weekly Hours: 6 day working weeks; 8 shows per week plus maintenance and understudy calls.
